If you HAVE to store a credit card, whats the best way to do it?

We all know its not a good idea to store a credit card from an online
transaction and should be avoided at all costs.
But...what
happens if you HAVE to store the card number? I have to store it for
an online accomodation booking service where third party hotels will
be able to view the credit card number used to book the initial
deposit online - and then complete the balance of the transaction
within their own systems.
Should the card be stored and encrypted
using RSA and then put a strong authentication layer via a web client
for the third party to view the card....or....
Should the card
number be encrypted and emailed to the third party where th

Hi guys and gurlls
I have a question regarding server-side/
database (PHP/MYSQL) ecommerce sites which I am about to start
developing
Currently there will not be an automated payment setup
until sales can justify it, so for the moment the customers details
are sent to the DB for retrieval later. (With SSL)
My question
is, is it safe to store customers credit card details in plain text on
the database? or should these be encrypted first. Anyone know how
Amazon or yahoo does it ?
What steps can be taken to prevent
credit card details being revealed, if a mysql password is breached,
or any other issues i should consider?

Hi Folks!
I need to be able to store credit card information
taken from an online form. I dont need to hang onto the data too long,
but I need to use it to set up several accounts with other providers
on my clients behalf.
Ive read that sending the data via e-mail
is a bad idea, and that its better to store it encryped in a database.
My question is how do you do a 2-way encryption for it? I know you can
use the MySQL PASSWORD for 1-way, but Im cluess on the proceedure for
2-way.
Can anyone help with this?
Thanks!
Chris

I'm thinking about starting up a web business. I'm in the site
development phase but before I get too deeply invested I want to start
learning how I'm going to protect my customers credit card numbers as
storing them to be charged at a later date is going to be a critical
part of my business. This is going to have to be done on a massive
scale (storing thousands of card to be charged at approximately the
same time) What do I need know in order to pull this off? Databases?
PHP? SSH/SSL? Is there a service like paypal that would store/secure
this information for me?
