Styling backup fonts with javascript or jquery

Hi all, I am using a small font for a primary nav, but when it doesn't load, the backup font that replaces it is enormous. I can't not use the small font as it's part of my work's branding, and no other default fonts are even remotely similar. Does anyone know how to do set a class using Javascript or Jquery to the backup font?
Thanks

In CSS why is a backup font recommended if I am uploading a custom font for use with the webpage?

I thought the backup fonts were only needed in case the client doesn't have the 1st/2nd/3rd..etc choice installed.

Is it faster/better to use CSS with classes on tables for odd/even rows generated on the server or to use jQuery to style stripes on document.Ready()?
