media players & iPod

For a while now I've been wishing I could replace iTunes with
something on Linux and reduce my need for Windows. It would be nice if
Apple would just release iTunes for Linux but I'M pretty sure that's
not going to happen. The thing is, nothing handles an iPod as good as
iTunes. I can't even play my audio books(.aax) from audible.com on a
Linux machine at all. Last time I had Banchee as my Linux media player
and had it running my iPod, a lot of really bad things happened. For
starters, it started re-naming all of my songs to 4 random capital
letters, something like this, TAGK, or XAZU, and also deleting songs
from my computer completely. I didn't notice it removing songs because

Last week Apple and Microsoft released their fourth quarter MP3
player sales figures, which Apple chooses to call its first quarter
for some odd reason, and the numbers were a startling contrast. On one
hand you had Microsoft with a 54 percent drop off in sales from the
fourth quarter last year. On the other, you had Apple, selling a
record number of iPods (again).

Somewhere Steve Ballmer must be
banging his head against a wall wondering if his company will ever
catch a break, while Steve Jobs convalesces contentedly knowing his
company continues to grow in spite of economic conditions that would
suggest that people would stop buying expensive little gadgets.

Ever since I have upgraded to Hardy it seems that Banshee will not
recognize my iPod when it's plugged in. I can access it as a storage
device which is fine as I have rockbox so I can add songs. But my main
question is is there any fixes for this? I have tried restarting the
Hardware Abstraction Layer(HAL) and also upgrading my version of
Banshee but nothing seems to work.
thanks in advance, Luke

Is there any other way to sync an ipod with media players other than
Rhythmbox? I really like Exaile and Banshee, but neither seem to
detect my ipod.
Ubuntu
I am still a relatively new Ubuntu user and I have really enjoyed the
OS with the exception of compatibility issues here and there. One of
my concerns was being able to use my iPod without the use of iTunes on
Linux. I have read several forums and articles regarding this issue
and have seen more then a fair share of success stories. I however
have been unable to do so and have become quite frustrated.
I
first attempted to use GTKpod and it loaded my library however the
iPod emits no sound. I tried various headsets that work with my
laptop but none played any sound. I then tried an iPod dock testing
to see if it was the iPod's audio jack. The dock also didn't work. I

Ubuntu

So I just downloaded the latest Ubuntu (14.10) today. I've fiddled
with it somewhat and everything is running fine except that every time
I try to use my iPod with a media player, it crashes the player. I've
tried Rhythmbox, Amarok, Clementine, and Banshee and I've installed
gtkpod. I've gotten the updates other forums told me to get. I'm at a
loss. I can't go back to Windows and my music is very important to me.
Please help.
