I had written a script to automatically back up my
"Documents" folder (personal, school, church, work
documents, etc.) to an external hard disk periodically... />Specifically, I wrote the scripts so they were scheduled with at. It
evolved into something fairly advanced, I had my backup schedule set
to run every four hours for an incremental, and if there was a problem
(eg. AC not connected, drive not connected) then it would try every
hour until it worked. I chose at because it will run past-due jobs
when the system boots up instead of skipping them like cron.
A
separate script I had ran a full backup once a week, with the same
retry policy as the increm

I'm currently considering turning an old desktop into a home server
solution, and I can't seem to settle on a particular approach. Many of
the previous questions I've found on the topic are incredibly outdated
or are suggesting things like purchasing a NAS. The computer was
primarily built and used for applications that my inexpensive laptop
couldn't handle, but now that I have a 2013 Macbook Air with the
maximum upgrades, it hasn't seen much use. It's running a 6-core
3.5GHz AMD processor, 16GB ram, a fantastic graphics card, the
works... so I think it's capable of handling whatever you throw at it
well enough.

I also have around 2TB of hard drive space on the inside, plus I
just purchased the 5TB Seagate external drive that was on sale over
the weekend.

The tasks I would like this server to accomplish:

  • Act as a file server. This one is pretty
straightforward. I take lots of pictures and work with some generally
large files and I would like a place to stick them when not in use
that isn't the tiny hard drive on my laptop.

  • Stream movies and TV shows. Preferably, I would
like to do this through Plex since it's the simplest solution for
accessing the files remotely, but I'm willing to bend on this.

  • Serve as a backup location for my laptop. I've
been using a portable 2TB drive to back my laptop up with Time
Machine, but it would be great to have a second location via Time
    Machine and/or CrashPlan.

  • Access file remotely. It would be great if I
could access my files in a Dropbox-like fashion. I've been bumping up
against my cloud storage limits, and it would be nice to have this
solution rather than paying a monthly premium. I use a lot of apps on
my iPad that access files on Dropbox, but that support other protocols
like WebDAV as well. It would be great if I could annotate a PDF on my
iPad, upload it to the server, and it's waiting for me on my laptop
    just like Dropbox does.

  • The ability to save it all to a cloud backup
    solution.
I like to keep all my data on CrashPlan as another
    line of safety.

I am completely flexible in how I would like to do this, and open
to any suggestions. I was thinking of something along the lines of
this:

  • Partitions for the major categories. Probably a
partition for my main file system, a partition exclusively for media
storage (i.e. movies, TV shows, and music), a partition exclusively
for photo storage, and a partition exclusively for an archive of files
that no longer need to be immediately accessed.

  • Mirror of my laptop. The main file system
partition would contain the files I use on my laptop and need/want
immediate access to. Basically, if my entire server was a Dropbox
folder, these would be the files I Selective Sync.

  • Versioned. Versioning of my files done right on
the server, although I don't know if this would work while also using
    CrashPlan.

  • Backed up via CrashPlan. I think if I do it this
way, with the server acting as a synced mirror of my desktop, I won't
even need to have CrashPlan on my laptop. I'll use Time Machine to
back up to my portable hard drive, but then I'll only have CrashPlan
right on the server to back everything up to the cloud.

Is there a ready made solution for this? Or perhaps I could
assemble a few separate pieces on a Windows or Linux install that
simply run over the file system? I've also read about FreeNAS in a few
places, but I'm not sure if that would be a good solution to use
here.

I'll set up Dynamic DNS so that I'm always able to access the
server away from home, and I'll invest in a UPS for my machine and
router as well.

The most important thing I want to be able to do is to
access everything in an flexible, Dropbox-like way.
My most
important day-to-day files will be synced directly between my laptop
and my server, but I will also be able to access all of the non-synced
file as if they are right on my laptop (so the files not on Selective
Sync) and from my remote devices that have WebDAV (or an equivalent
protocol) support.

Am I asking too much, or is there a feasible solution to my
problem?
