Mythbackend crashes on clean mythbuntu 14.04 install

HOME ยป Ubuntu
Recently had a drive crash in my MythTV server - been running
mythbuntu 14.04 for some time. So I got a new drive and did a clean
install (frontend and backend on the same machine), and now
mythbackend is constantly crashing. It will crash whenever I try to
schedule a recording via mythweb, and nothing will record. If I try to
schedule recordings it appears to simply ignore the request (nothing
is recorded), but doesn't crash immediately. It will also crash at
times for no apparant reason.

I grabbed the mythTV Backend log and it's here: href="http://pastebin.com/ChEJfUnE"
target="_blank">http://pastebin.com/ChEJfUnE

Any help is greatly appreciated - this has worked for years on this
hardware/network setup and I'm not sure why it has suddenly
stopped...

I've been almost successful in getting my Mythbuntu machine in working
order. Some tv shows appear to record fine, but after a few recordings
the memory in my system decreases to the point where mythbackend is
killed by the kernel. Previously I had used the exact same hardware
for over a year running Gentoo so I suspect that it is not a hardware
issue. It's AMD Sempron 2800+, 512Mb Ram, Hauppauge 350, w/ 1.5Gb swap
partition on a 250Gb hard drive.
My kern.log after a mythbackend
crash is as follows:

Hi, I've just upgrade my Mythbuntu from Jaunty to Karmic (Beta) and I
have strange new problem.
Mythtv-backend script seems to no
longer autostart.
It seems that the /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend
script has been upgraded to upstart and I get a message recommending
that I use the service command instead.
I can start the backend
manually with "sudo start mythtv-backend", and it works
correctly, but I still can't get the backend to autostart when the
computer first turns on.
Would appreciate some help as I've been
struggling with this one for hours now. />/var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log doesn't seem to be coming up

Recently I upgraded my Mythbuntu 10.04 64-bit system to 10.10 64-bit
and then my sound stopped working. After trying to fix it, I just
decided to do a fresh install of Mythbuntu 10.10 64-bit. Still, no
sound was working.
My sound codec is Realtek ALC887. As stated
above, I previously had it working when I had 10.04, but when I
upgraded it to 10.10, sound no longer worked in anything. So I did a
fresh install to see if that would resolve the issue. It didn't. />The hardware is being recognized by Mythbuntu, all outputs are
un-muted, but still no sound.
I've got it connected via the
digital optical audio-out port to my receiver. No issues with receiver

This week I restarted from scratch and installed a clean Mythbuntu
10.10 onto a fresh hard disk (not an upgrade of a previous
installation).
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Everything works fine
except for one thing: it seems that the backend does not start
automatically. What could be the cause, on a clean install, and how
can I fix that?
DETAILS:
As soon as the frontend starts, it
gives me a dialog box with:
"Could not connect to the master
backend server -- is it running? Is the IP address set for it in the
setup program correct? OK"
The manual fix is to launch the
backend, ie:
move to an

I'm trying to set up monit to monitor and restart my mythbackend,
which occasionally tends to freeze. I think it is possibly related to
some DVB-T tda10046 driver issues...But I cannot find a mythbackend
pidfile for the normal monit setup:
class="bbcode_container"> class="bbcode_description">Code:
check
process mythbackend with pidfile /var/run/mythtv/mythbackend.pid /> group mythtv
 start program =
"/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend restart"
