I was looking over a tutorial about anti viruses and malware and stuff like that and that subject is something that caught my interest alot! (Unfortunatly the software he did was written in VB)

So I am trying to develop something simple to get my feet wet in this area.

The thought is that I browse for a file (its simple just use the OpenFileDialog)

then I select it and the code checks for a certain hash to see if its malicious or not

based upon a list or something of a bunch of hashes that I already collected from somewhere

To me the thought seems really simple, not sure if this is even possible? If it is would you mind providing me with some examples or show me someone who has done this before and would have some examples ready for me to read from.

Why is checking MD5 hash important
by dreshyne2g in Web Development

Oftentimes when you download a file, the site offering the download will list the MD5 hash for the file being downloaded.

But I've never had a problem with getting a bad download. In fact, I thought that since FTP was a TCP protocol, you couldn't get bad downloads.

Any ideas for a Hash Function to generate a Hask Key from file path name? I'd like to use this to maintain information about every file, as path for every file is unique, even if they have the same file name!
