Android Front Facing Camera Android 4.0.3 ICS Start Failed

HOME ยป Android

I'm trying to create a Android app that records a video from the
front facing camera. The preview works fine, but as soon as i start
recording the app crashes with the error "java.lang.RuntimeException:
start failed." I've tried the same with the rear facing camera, but it
has the same problem. Im working on a Samsung Tab 2 P5110 which is
running Android ICS 4.0.3.

This is my Actvity class that
shows the preview and should start the recording.

Okay so I have spent all day trying to fix this problem, I have
read every article on StackOverflow relating to the error code and
other similar issues but nothing seems to make any difference.

I have two different code bases with the same problem.

The first one is code copied straight from developer.android.com
here: />http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/media/camera.html#custom-camera

/>

The second one is this code:

Both work fine with the normal rear camera, but as soon as I try
to use the front

I had this problem with my app (ScareApp) that uses the front
facing camera to record video. I "think" I've finally resolved the
issue, so thought I would post it here for any developers that run
into the same thing....

Basically..
The android
MediaRecorder allows you to define the Video and Audio Encoder, and
according to the docs, DEFAULT can be used for each.
However,
this refers to the main camera's settings, which is often a far higher
spec than the front facing camera.
DEFAULT on the Droid Razr for
example, selects an encoding (MPEG_4_SP) that isn't available for the
Front facing camera, and this results in an empty (0kb) file being
produced (or

supported video sizes which works great. I just need to know how to
get it for front facing cameras only. Thanks
