Java/JNDI - Connect to DB without knowing password? Is it really secure or can developers really get access to password…?
Information Security

I am dumb here....Please educate me

I ve done this JNDI stuff many years back...where we connect to a DB without knowing the password...with just the DB name...

My question is - once we get the data source back from JNDI- as a developer, can I go in debug mode in eclipse and drill down the data source object to view the password...to that DB? or am i talking something that doesn't make any sense..

If i am making sense here, then how to really secure that password...from the developers eye.

I haven't tried it as of now...

Please advise?

php username and password validation secure code

I am using WYSIWYG Webbuilder 8 to construct a website. Part of the website will be restricted access to registered users only. To this end I have created a MySQL database. I also have a sign-up form. When a new user wishes to sign-up I would like to have the username automatically checked against the database to make sure it doesn't already exist. I intend doing this using an AJAX function as the WYSIWYG software has this option built in. What I need to build myself and this is where I'm struggling is the validate.php that the AJAX command will go to.

I have something like this at present (please excuse my ignorance!):

<?php

I am trying to implement a page where the staff can login and add, modify, update work cases.

I have a select list with data (staff names) loaded from a DB. In this DB I have the basics, username, id, password, email.

The default value for the select list/box is "-"; when it changes, a form pops up asking to enter the password for the SELECTed staff member.

With jQuery, I send the id, user and password (plain text) to the server. In the php file,
I escape (mysqli_real_escape_string) ALL three variables and hash (md5($salt.$varname)) the password.

I the query the mysql DB with <
