NullPointer while using Cursor

I couldn't find a suitable title for my question. Here is the problem... After syso'ing the statement in getData(), it should print the values in the cursor, cMainTable, using the statement in displayDataForMainTable(). But, it doesn't. There are no exceptions, and errors. I have also kept the output that i get in the LogCat. Can someone help

There is a possiblity that this may be a dupicate question.
I initialize a String variable to null.I may or may not update it with a value.Now I want to check whether this variable is not equal to null and whatever I try I get a null pointer exception.I can't afford to throw nullpointer exception as it is costly.Is there any workaround that is efficient.TIA

I have been following some android tutorials on the web. I tried copying his code to the best of my ability but whenever I run the application it crashes. I looked through the console and found it was a Nullpointer exception that caused it. The application is meant to play a sound and then close and then go to another layout.
Here is my code, please tell me what I did wrong.

when trying to edit a layout in the GUI. I stopped working on this project a while ago, but I'm coming back to it, but it seems uneditable. Any tips?
