Do I need to deal with Audio Units when I need custom audio effects or can I rely on Audio Queue Services?

From my understanding Audio Queue Services are a higher level API than Audio Units, which use Audio Units. OpenAL also uses Audio Units. So Audio Units is the lowest level audio API in iOS.

Can I decrypt an audio stream using audio units or audio queues? (iOS)

I have an audio file which has been broken into chunks of size let's say 10kb, the chunks encrypted. I can't have a whole unencrypted file on disk, so to play it, I'll need to stream it from disk, i.e. I'll have to read in each 10kb chunk, decrypt the chunk, and play it back.
