Programmatic Entry on databound datagridview's uncommitted row isn't causing new row to appear. When selected, entry disappears
by Philippines in Programming Languages

I have a training project at my new job and a really small but crucial setback.

I have a datagridview control bound to a dataset read from an xml file. It has 3 columns: item, price, calories. I am supposed to calculate the average values for price and calories and place them in the row below the entries that are read in from the xml. This works fine, except that when I fill the bo

How can I update a child collection entry instead of adding a new entry with Entity Framework?
by Nick Pegg in Web Design

When calling the Add method in the Appointments controller a new entry is created in the student table even when there is a matching student.

What I want is to update the matching student entry based on the foreign key which has already been established. Of course if there is no match then it should insert.

Is inserting a new database entry faster than checking if the entry exists first?
by Mark in Databases

I was once told that it is faster to just run an insert and let the insert fail than to check if a database entry exists and then inserting if it is missing.

I was also told that that most databases are heavily optimized for reading reading rather than writing, so wouldn't a quick check be faster than a slow insert?

Is this a question of the expected number of collisions

Adding entry to a .tar.gz file using TrueZip pushes that entry with zero size
by GregoryWE in Programming Languages

I am using the TrueZip library to inject an entry to a .tar.gz file.
On running my code, I find the file I want to inject getting pushed to the .tar.gz file.
But the inserted entry has zero size, i.e. it appears that only a placeholder gets created for that entry and its contents are not copied.
Here is the piece of code:
