How do I use the StackExchange API from Matlab?

How do I access data from the StackExchange API using Matlab?

The naive

sitedata = urlread('http://api.stackoverflow.com/1.1/questions?tagged=matlab')

fails since the data is compressed. However, when I write this to file (using fprintf(fileID,'%s',sitedata)), I get a zip-file that cannot be uncompressed.

I have a feeling I'm doing something wrong here, but I'm not quite sure if I'm missing a step, or am just having an encoding problem or something. Here's my code:

URL url = new URL("http://api.stackoverflow.com/0.8/questions/2886661");
BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(url.openStream()));
// Question q = new Gson().fromJson(in, Question

How are the exchange boxes being rearranged on stackexchange.com/sites?
by Alexander Schuc in Web Design

I couldn't seem to make sense of the JS on stackexchange.com/sites. It looks like there is some balancing, rotating etc. going on when you expand one of the stack exchange information boxes. I was wondering how this is being achieved? At least how is this likely being achieved in terms of its data structure and how it's being put into effect in this setting?

How to scrape “table like” data from stackexchange homepage? (in R)
by YBS1 in Web Design

I wish to scrape the home page of one of the new stackexchange websites: http://webapps.stackexchange.com/ (just once, and for only several pages, nothing that should bother the servers). If I had wanted it from stackoverflow, I know there is a database dump, but for the new stackexchange, they don't exist yet.

Here is what I want to do.

Step 1: choose URL
