I wish this help you I was able to accomplish this by using display: inline-grid on the parent element and then adding the property grid-template-columns: 1fr 1fr 1fr to the parent as well (1fr per column needed).
code :
div.inline {
    display: inline-grid;
    grid-template-columns: 1fr 1fr;
}

div.cell {
    border: 1px dotted grey;
    text-align: center;
}
content
<div class='inline'>
    <div class='cell'>lorem ipsum lorem ipsum</div>
    <div class='cell'>lorem</div>
</div>

it fixes the issue just remove height from container and side, or set it auto:
the overflow happens because 100% is initial size of html.
code :
html,
    body {
      height: 100%;
    }
    .side {
      flex: 0 0 250px;
      background-color: blue;
      height: auto;
    }
    .mycontainer {
      display: flex;
      height: auto;
    }
    .main {
      padding: 0 20px 0 20px;
      flex: 1 1 auto;
      height: 100%;
      background: green;
    }
.expand {
  height: 400px;
  transition: height 0.3s;
  }
.expand:hover {
  height: 200px;
}
<div class="mycontainer">
  <div class="side"></div>
  <div class="main">
    <div>
     <div class="expand"></div>
    </div>

  </div>

it should still fix some issue I have come up with the answer for those of you who are interested. However I have had to modify my initial requirements. Instead of trying to get two buttons to display side-by-side, I reduced it down to one button. Given that, here is the answer... This appears to work across browsers.
fiddle example of resolution
code :
.child {
    width: 1%;
}

.child.button {
    width: 100%;
}

Any of those help Generally, an inline wrapper solve these issues, where the items are sized based on their content.
In this case would an inline flex container using column direction fix that.
code :
.wrapper {
  display: inline-flex;
  flex-direction: column;
}

div {
  border: 1px solid black;
}

.container {
  display: flex
}

.box {
  flex: 1
}

.left {
  text-align: left;
  padding-left: 20px
}

.right {
  text-align: right;
  padding-right: 20px
}

.recursive {
  padding: 0 5vw
}
<div class="wrapper">
  <div class="container">
    <div class="box left">
      2314
    </div>
    <div class="box right">
      55453

may help you . I'm trying to vertically position two divs (1&2), set to 'display: inline-block'. Can't understand why vertical-align doesn't want to work?
code :
.parent {
  border: 1px solid red;
  height: 150px;
  width: 100%;
  display: table;
}

.parent > * {
  display: table-cell;
    text-align: center;
    vertical-align:middle;
}

#div1,
#div2 {
  display: inline-block;
  border: 1px solid blue;
}
<div class="parent">
  <div>
    <div id="div1">
      <span>Lorem ipsum dolor sit, amet consectetur adipisicing elit.
     </span>
    </div>
    <div id="div2">
      <span>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit.
     </span>
    </div>
  </div>
</div>
