I think the issue was by ths following , If you want to use SingleTop in this instance then you need to move the code that loads the video details from onCreate to onResume as the VideoDetail activity is only being created once and then resumed whenever an intent tries to launch it again.

it fixes the issue You definitely don't want to mess with the launchMode. That isn't the way to solve this problem and will just cause you more problems.
Android can (and will) kill your process whenever it wants to (but especially if your application is in the background). Because of this, you need to save the state of your game in onPause(), because that is the only opportunity that you are guaranteed to have.

Hope this helps This doesn't really work the way you think it does. You are trying to use launchMode="singleTask", but since you haven't also set "taskAffinity", Android pretty much ignores your launchMode.
You should not need to use either of the special launch modes "singleTask" or "singleInstance" to get what you want.
