To fix this issue For Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 - That's the only one that works currently, isn't it?
When adding a sub-report [or changing the "Change Subreport Links" for an existing report] you can select the parameter on the subreport from the drop-down on the bottom left of the 'Links' tab (or Subreport Links dialog, if editing an existing subreport)

Does that help You can pass datasource via the built-in REPORT_DATA_SOURCE parameter.
The example:
code :
    <reportElement x="261" y="25" width="200" height="100"/>
    <subreportExpression><![CDATA[$P{SUBREPORT_DIR} + "subreport.jasper"]]></subreportExpression>
<variable name="HeadingsCollection" class="java.util.Collection" calculation="System">
    <initialValueExpression><![CDATA[new java.util.ArrayList()]]></initialValueExpression>
    <reportElement x="0" y="0" width="515" height="20"/>
    <subreportParameter name="ReportTitle">
    <dataSourceExpression><![CDATA[new net.sf.jasperreports.engine.data.JRBeanCollectionDataSource($V{HeadingsCollection})]]></dataSourceExpression>
    <subreportExpression class="java.lang.String"><![CDATA["HeadingsReport.jasper"]]></subreportExpression>
<field name="cast" class="java.util.Collection"/>
    <reportElement positionType="Float" x="15" y="25" width="245" height="20" isRemoveLineWhenBlank="true" backcolor="#99CCFF"/>
    <dataSourceExpression><![CDATA[new net.sf.jasperreports.engine.data.JRBeanCollectionDataSource($F{cast})]]></dataSourceExpression>
    <subreportExpression class="java.lang.String"><![CDATA["JRMDbCastSubreport.jasper"]]></subreportExpression>
<parameter name="SubreportDataSource" class="net.sf.jasperreports.engine.JRDataSource"/>
    <reportElement positionType="Float" x="15" y="25" width="245" height="20" isRemoveLineWhenBlank="true"/>
    <subreportExpression class="java.lang.String"><![CDATA["Subreport.jasper"]]></subreportExpression>

this will help You can pass the subreport path as main report parameter and get number of subreports like this.
code :
            String file = /pathToMainReport/name.jrxml;
            String subreport1 = /pathToSubReport/name1.jasper;
            String subreport2 = /pathToSubReport/name2.jasper;

            JasperReport jreport = JasperCompileManager.compileReport(file);

            Map<String, Object> map = new HashMap<String, Object>();

            map.put("SUBREPORT_DIR1", subreport1);
            map.put("SUBREPORT_DIR2", subreport2);

            JasperPrint jprint = JasperFillManager.fillReport(jreport, map, connection);

wish of those help To pass a value from a subreport to its parent, the parent must first have a variable to receive the value. In your case the main report should have 4 variables, one each for presentPayable, presentPayment, balance, and totalCost.
Next you need to add a returnValue element to the subreport element in the main report. This element maps a variable in the subreport to a variable in this report using the attributes subreportVariable and toVariable.
