With these it helps I suspect the syntax error is more likely caused by the fact that "Some text" isn't in quotes. Try fixing that first.
MySQL's syntax errors can be rather vague at times; it probably pointed you to a region of your query rather than the particular tripping spot.

This might help you If I have a string like below: , You need to use a recursive pattern, example:
code :
$pattern = '~{((?>[^{}]++|(?R))*)}~';

this will help It is very much doable, though you might want to make sure you really need to do it using regex, as the result isn't quite pretty, and pretty much unmaintanable:
code :
val regex =  """[^\{\[]*[\{\[](((?<=\{)[^}]*)|((?<=\[)[^\]]*))[\}\]]""".r
scala> val configByLines = """text {text10}
     | text {text1, text9}
     | anotherText [
     | {text2, text5}
     | {text3, text6}
     | {test4, text8}
     | ]"""
configByLines: String =
text {text10}
text {text1, text9}
anotherText [
{text2, text5}
{text3, text6}
{test4, text8}
]

scala> val regex =  """[^\{\[]*[\{\[](((?<=\{)[^}]*)|((?<=\[)[^\]]*))[\}\]]""".r
regex: scala.util.matching.Regex = [^\{\[]*[\{\[](((?<=\{)[^}]*)|((?<=\[)[^\]]*))[\}\]]

scala> val line = regex findAllIn configByLines.replace("\n", " ")
line: scala.util.matching.Regex.MatchIterator = non-empty iterator

scala> line.matchData foreach {
     |   m => println("output: "+m.group(1))
     | }
output: text10
output: text1, text9
output:  {text2, text5} {text3, text6} {test4, text8}

this will help You're falling victim to a "trap" in the semicolon insertion rules. After a return, a semicolon is assumed if an expression doesn't start on the same line.
If you change your function as follows, it should work:
code :
function displayMatches () {
    const matchArray = findMatches(this.value, cities)
    console.log(matchArray)
    const html = matchArray.map(place => {
        return `<li>
            <span class="name">${place.city}, ${place.state}</span>
            <span class="population">${place.population}</span>
        </li>`
    }).join('')
    suggestion.innerHTML = html

}

will be helpful for those in need {[^{]+?} would work for your test case. However, this won't support arbitrary nesting, which is not possible with regex. If that's what you're looking for, you'll need a parser.
Example: https://regex101.com/r/GrqGdS/1
