this one helps. if you are trying to compare to something like jconsole or jvisualvm with the main window displaying 'total heap usage' I found out that by adding 'used eden space' and 'used ps old generation space' I got the equivalent of what that graph shows in the aforementioned programs -- that's what I tend to go on now

I hope this helps . You can use tools like VisualVM to get some information about running VMs.
why there is difference in Heap dump size generated by jmap and jcmd?

it helps some times JMAP took an all-objects dump and JCMD took an only live-objects dump.
Using JCMD command: While using this command you have to pass -all option. Otherwise, it will request a full GC and generates only live objects dump.

it helps some times jmap -dump:live,file=live-dump.bin
live option in jmap command below forces JVM to do a full GC before dumping content of heap into a file.
JMAP dump size is 4.5 GB. Eclipse MAT is showing total heap of 415 MB, how do i analyze the remaining dump?

I think the issue was by ths following , You may have a Thread leak, having created an excessive number of threads which never terminate. Each thread allocates stack space, which isn't shown above. Pressing Ctrl-\ (unix) (or Ctrl-Break in windows) will dump a stack trace of every thread (you may need to redirect tomcat's STDERR to avoid it scrolling off your terminal). If you didn't start tomcat from the terminal, then use "kill -QUIT YourPID" rather than Ctrl-.
Also, jconsole (in the jdk bin directory) can attach to your executable, before it stops responding. It might be able to show you a leak of threads (or heap) before things get out of hand.

I had to run sudo yum --enablerepo='*-debug*' install java-1.8.0-openjdk-debuginfo as well.
