Session management between thick client and server?

Session management between thick client and server?

I hope this helps . Since you're leaning toward web services (it sounds like you are) I'd think about taking the user information from your rich client (I assume user ID and password), using WS-Security to send the encrypted info to a web service, and having the web service do the auth stuff. Also I'd think about the web service returning any info that you want to go back to the rich client about the user (first/last name, etc).

seems to work fine You could use SQL Server 2008 Express on the client, BUT you would have to install it. There is also SQL Server Compact 3.5:

I wish this help you Kerberos doesn't run over 'straight TCP'. It uses an encryption protocol. See the JGSS-API, built into the JRE.

With these it helps Currently I am using Node.js for the backend and either extjs or backbone for the client and I am now completely confused on the folder structure. , In your place, I would do that way:
code :
appname
  |--ServerCode
  | |--controllers
  | |--models
  | | |--appmodel.js
  | |--routes
  | | |--router.js
  | |--views
  | | |--appview.ejs
  | |--app.js
  |--public
  | |--css
  | |--js // any client-side javascripts
  | |--models
  | |--controllers
  | |--...

this one helps.
I create the user at the database level and my thick client app will authenticate with database using the provided user id and password. Is this method safe enough?

I think the issue was by ths following , Comment as answer, as requested:
Consider google protocol buffers for the message encoding and decoding. Version 3 supports both json and binary encoding. It also has stubs for RPC, which you'll find useful.
