fixed the issue. Will look into that further Check that .metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.wst.server.core/tmp0/wtpwebapps/Myproject/WEB-INF/lib/standard-1.1.2.jar is not corrupted (and do some cleanup if required).

wish of those help This actually took awhile to chase down as the error message is not entirely reflective of what the actual problem is, but in a nut shell this an similar sounding errors (i.e. "Unable to read TLD “META-INF/*.tld” from JAR file") seem to occur when there is a class conflict between one the JAR files that you have deployed and what is deployed with Tomcat itself. This turned out to be the case for my error as there were two files in place (javax.servlet.jsp-api-2.2.1.jar and el-api-1.0.jar) that were conflicting.

it should still fix some issue I was facing with the same situation and I realize that the error is thrown, obviously, because something went wrong with JSTL. Since, STS templates rely on Maven2, you should need to manually delete the JSTL artifact from your local Maven2 repository.
In Windows 7: Delete the folder c:\Users\\.m2\repository\javax\servlet\jstl\.

like below fixes the issue You're using tomcat 5.5 which is a Servlet 2.4 container, but JSF 2.0 requires Servlet 2.5 or newer.
So you have 2 options:

this one helps. I've created a custom tag and included the following maven dependency in order to get the required java classes (tagsupport, etc.) , Try to use this dependency in "provided" scope :
