it fixes the issue Pretty sure NSXMLElement (at least currently - 4.2) isn't available under iOS.
From the "Migrating from Cocoa" section of the iOS Technology Overview docs:

will help you It's probably because the xpath context used by libxml2 holds a reference to the document. If there is no document, it probably doesn't know how to operate. The behavior if you search for * may just be a special-case because it knows it has to return everything so it doesn't even try to search.

I hope this helps you . Checked with Apple, this is a known issue with NSXMLDocument and it has now been filed as a bug report.
Suggested workaround include using libxml2 for the time being.

seems to work fine I'm trying to retrieve "number" from the below mentioned code. , Try:
code :
NSXMLElement *number = [query elementForName:@"number" xmlns:@"urn:XYZ:number"];
<iq from='coven@chat.shakespeare.lit'
    id=‘XYZ'
    to='hag66@shakespeare.lit/pda'
    type='result'>
  <query xmlns='urn:XYZ:number'>
    <number>4</number>
  </query>
</iq>
NSXMLElement *xml = [[[NSXMLElement alloc]initWithXMLString:xmlString error:Nil]autorelease] is not working

NSXMLElement *xml = [[[NSXMLElement alloc]initWithXMLString:xmlString error:Nil]autorelease] is not working

fixed the issue. Will look into that further An XML document can only have one root element. Your example xmlString has multiple root elements:
