I hope this helps . Because you started your regex with ^ and ended with $. Those specify that the match must begin at the start of the string and end at the end. Since your match is in the middle, it was not found.

To fix the issue you can do Your regex checks if there is one or more of the list characters you specified -- and that's true for 123e.
It doesn't check if the string contains only those.
