To fix the issue you can do There is an overhead to using SSL, although in reality it may not cause a concern - as pointed out in this SO question.You can minimise what overhead there is by only using SSL for those transactions where it adds value -

Any of those help No, NAGLE does not effect SYN or SYN+ACK. Neither does delayed ACK (logically enough, you want the SYN+ACK to come back as quick as possible, and there is no congestion state to cause a holdoff yet anyway).
